Safety profile and immunological response of dual sublingual immunotherapy with house dust mite tablet and Japanese cedar pollen tablet

Main idea: Dual therapy with both sublingual immunotherapy tablets administered within 5 min after 4 weeks of monotherapy with House dust mite or Japanese cedar pollen tablet was well tolerated and induced the expected immunological responses.

Abstract

Background: There were no studies of dual administration of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) tablets for perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis.

This was a multicenter, open-label, randomized trial of 109 Japanese patients with coexisting House dust mite and Japanese cedar pollen allergic rhinitis who had positive tests for House dust mite and Japanese cedar pollen-specific IgE (≥0.7 kU/L).

Results: The percentage of subjects with adverse effects on the treatment was similar between the two groups and between the two periods of monotherapy and dual therapy. Most adverse effects were mild in severity, and no serious events were observed. The most common adverse effects were local events in the oral cavity. Levels of IgE and IgG4 specific for House dust mite (D. farinae, D. pteronyssinus) and Japanese cedar pollen were increased after treatment with House dust mite and sublingual immunotherapy tablets, respectively.
