The surgical literature often uses a different classification to recognize particularly severe obesity. The categories are as follows:
- Severe obesity - BMI greater than 40 kg/m2;
- Morbid obesity - BMI of 40-50 kg/m2;
- Super obese - BMI greater than 50 kg/m2.
