Broken collarbone symptoms

Typically, broken collarbone symptoms and signs include:

  • Pain that is made worse by the movement of the shoulder
  • Tenderness in the collarbone
  • Swelling in the area of the broken collarbone
  • The inability to move the shoulder; stiffness
  • Bruising in the area
  • A crackling or grinding sound when trying to move the shoulder
  • A bulge near or on the shoulder, caused by the broken collarbone

When to see a doctor

Seek medical attention right away if any of the above signs or symptoms of a broken collarbone are noticed or if you or your child has enough pain that the shoulder cannot be used in the normal ways. Poor healing can result from a delay in treatment for a broken collarbone.

Broken collarbone diagnosis

If your health care provider suspects a broken collarbone diagnosis, the area will be examined for swelling and tenderness to see if there are any open wounds or deformities. X-rays may be obtained to determine exactly where the break has occurred and to determine if the joints have been affected. A Computerized Tomography (CT) scan is sometimes obtained for more information.
