Symptoms of joint dislocation

Signs and symptoms of a dislocated joint may include the following:

  • The joint looks out of place or deformed
  • Intense pain in the joint
  • The joint is swollen and changes color
  • The joint is very stiff and cannot be moved
  • Numbness or tingling may be present below the injured joint

When to see a doctor

It is not always easy to determine if a bone is broken or dislocated. In either case, you or your child need medical care right away. While you are waiting for medical treatment, apply ice to the joint if possible, and keep it immobile.

Joint dislocation diagnosis

In order to check joint dislocation diagnosis, your doctor will physically examine you to assess your injury and may order the following tests:

  • X-ray: An x-ray image of your injury can confirm the diagnosis of dislocation, and it can also show any other damage to your joint or bones, such as fractures.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): An MRI helps your doctor get a better view of the soft tissues and structures around your joint and assess for injuries that may not show up on an x-ray.

Pathological changes

Associated with the trauma, the capsule that surrounds and encloses the joint may be injured and torn. Additionally, the nerves, tendons, muscles, and ligaments associated with the joint may be injured, as well as its vascular supply disrupted.
