Healthy Eyes: How to Improve Your Eyesight

Having a good vision is an important aspect of living a happy, healthy life. The earlier we take care of our eyes, the more likely we will maintain good eyesight throughout our lives.

How to improve eyesight

  • Protect eyes from the sun. If you are outside in the sun, you should wear sunglasses with UV protection to prevent the harmful rays from weakening your vision over time. It is better to wear sunglasses that block out 99 to 100% of UVA and UVB radiation from sunlight. Sunglasses of good quality help protect your eyes from conditions associated with eye damage, such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and pterygium.
  • Use protective eyewear. You should protect your eyes with appropriate eyewear to avoid injuries to the eyes. Protective eyewear is necessary when working with chemicals, materials such as metal shards, wood shavings, sharp objects, etc. For this purpose, you can purchase protective goggles.   • Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Nutrition rich in Vitamin A and antioxidants can help improve your eyesight and slow down vision loss associated with age.   • Get enough sleep. Your eyes may feel gritty and dry when you are overtired. A healthy amount and good quality of sleep may reduce eyes tiredness and therefore improve your eyesight.

  • Manage chronic conditions. Type 2 diabetes can lead to damage in the tiny blood vessels in the eyes – a condition known as diabetic retinopathy.   • Take breaks from screen time. When you are working at a computer for a long time, the strain on your eyes can be especially intense. To reduce the strain, follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, you need to stop staring at the computer and look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Regular eye exam. A regular eye exam is the most effective way to ensure that your eyes are in optimum health. An eye exam can show potential problems and help maintain healthy eyes and good eyesight.
  • Quit smoking. Smoking can increase your chances of developing optic nerve damage, cataracts, and macular degeneration associated with age. All of the listed conditions lead to impaired vision. Fortunately, after quitting, your eyes begin to recover from years of tobacco-induced damage. The longer you can escape tobacco, the more your blood vessels will benefit, and inflammation will reduce.
  • Maintain good hygiene. Face and hands should be washed thoroughly and regularly. If you wear contact lenses, clean and store them appropriately. Keep chemicals and cosmetics out of your eyes.
  • Eye exercises. Eye exercises are beneficial in reducing eye strain. However, if you have such conditions as myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), or astigmatism, you probably will not benefit from eye exercises.

  • Niacin (Vitamin B3) helps in preventing glaucoma, acts as an antioxidant. However, this supplement must be taken with caution because when niacin is consumed in high amounts (1.5-5 grams per day), it may cause adverse effects on the eyes, such as blurred vision, inflammation of the cornea, and macular damage.
  • Lutein and Zeaxanthin are parts of the carotenoids family (beneficial compounds synthesized from plants). Lutein and Zeaxanthin help in preventing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. 
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids assist in preventing diabetic retinopathy and help deal with dry eyes. In addition, Omega-3 Fatty Acids also possess anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Thiamine (Vitamin B1) reduces your risk of cataracts development. In addition, Thiamine supplements have been proposed to treat diabetic retinopathy.
