Broken ankle or broken foot definition

A broken foot or ankle are fairly common injuries. They may occur if you take a wrong step, if you fall down, or they may happen as a result of a more serious accident, such as a motor vehicle accident. The severity of a broken foot or broken ankle varies. They can be as tiny as a crack that is barely visible on an X-ray or as severe as a break in which a fragment of bone pierces through the skin.

Treatment for a broken foot or a broken ankle is dependent upon where the break occurs and also upon the severity of the fracture. A severe fracture may need surgery that includes the placement of rods, screws, or plates to help hold the broken bones in the correct position while healing takes place.

When to see a doctor

If your pain interferes with your ability to walk, or if swelling or pain persists for more than a few days, you should see a doctor. It is important to seek medical attention if you have symptoms of a broken foot or broken ankle.
