Nowadays, infertility affects one in every six couples. Researchers estimate that one out of every three cases is due to problems with fertility in the male partner alone. Basically, male infertility is when a man has a low chance to make his female partner pregnant. Male fertility usually depends on sperm cells’ quality and count.
Although infertility cannot always be treated, there are some practices you can do to increase your chances of conceiving.

Male infertility causes

Infertility has multiple causes, including genetics, age, fitness, general health, diseases, lifestyle, dietary contaminants, etc. Sometimes infertility occurs because of a problem with sexual function, and sometimes because of the poor quality of the semen. Possible causes of male infertility include:

  • Testosterone levels
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Libido
  • Sperm motility
  • Sperm count
  • Testicular disease
  • Secondary hypogonadism (a problem in the pituitary gland or hypothalamus – parts of the brain that control the levels of testosterone and sperm production in the testicles)

How to boost male fertility

  1. D-aspartic acid (D-AA) supplements. It is a form of amino acid called aspartic acid. It is primarily found in certain glands, including the testicles and cells of semen and sperm. In infertile men, the levels of D-AA are significantly lower in comparison with fertile men. Studies have shown that D-AA supplements may increase testosterone levels. Testosterone is a male sex hormone playing a critical role in male fertility. However, studies in strength-trained men or athletes with normal to high levels of testosterone have shown that D-AA does not increase its levels further and even decreases them at high doses. Thus, current evidence points out that D-AA supplementation may boost fertility in men with low testosterone levels. Still, men with normal to high testosterone levels may not consistently benefit from them.
  2. Eat a healthy diet. Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables since they are full of antioxidants and might improve the health of your sperm.
  3. Get enough vitamin D. It is another micronutrient that may improve testosterone levels. Study results suggested that vitamin-D-deficient men had lower testosterone levels. High vitamin D levels are linked to improved sperm motility. However, the evidence is inconsistent.
  4. Maintain normal levels of vitamin C. Studies suggest that taking antioxidant supplements, such as vitamin C, may improve fertility. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can cause oxidative stress in the body when they reach harmful levels. It can occur when the body’s antioxidant defenses are devastated due to disease, unhealthy lifestyle, or environmental pollutants. The evidence has shown that oxidative stress may lead to male infertility. By consuming enough antioxidants, such as vitamin C, you may be able to counteract some of these harmful effects. Some evidence also indicates that vitamin C may improve sperm motility and count the quality of semen while reducing the numbers of deformed sperm cells. However, before making any definite claims, controlled studies are needed.
  5. Avoid sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Sexually transmitted infections can result in infertility in men. To protect yourself from STIs, limit the number of your sexual partners and use a condom every time you have sex. You can also remain in a mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner.
  6. Exercise regularly. Regular exercising may increase testosterone levels and improve fertility in men. Studies indicate that men involved in regular exercise have higher testosterone levels and better semen quality compared to men who do not exercise. However, too much exercise may have an opposite effect and potentially lower the levels of testosterone. Consuming a healthy amount of zinc can minimize this risk.
  7. Minimize your stress. Sexual satisfaction and fertility may be impaired by stress. In addition, prolonged stress increases cortisol levels. When cortisol level goes up, the levels of testosterone tend to decrease. Severe anxiety is usually treated with medications. To reduce milder forms of stress, you may use relaxation techniques, including meditation, walking in nature, spending time with friends and relatives, exercising, etc.
  8. Maintain healthy levels of zinc in your body. Zinc is an essential mineral. Animal foods, including meat, fish, eggs, and shellfish, contain large amounts of zinc. Observational studies found that zinc deficiency is associated with poor quality of sperm cells, reduced testosterone levels, and elevated risk of male infertility. Zinc supplements may lower the risk of decreased testosterone levels associated with an excessive amount of exercise. However, these observational findings need to be confirmed by controlled trials.
  9. Consider plant-based supplements. Fenugreek supplements, maca root supplements, and Tribulus terrestis root supplements may help improve men’s libido, fertility, and sexual performance.
  10. Avoid bad habits. Limit your alcohol consumption and quit smoking to avoid low testosterone levels, decreased sperm production, and impotence.

How to increase sperm count

It is essential to have a healthy sperm count to be fertile. Normal healthy semen contains 40-300 million sperm cells per milliliter. Sperm count is considered low if semen contains 10-20 million sperm cells per milliliter. A sperm count of 20 million per milliliter may be sufficient for pregnancy if the sperm cells are healthy.
You can increase sperm count and improve the health of your sperm cells by doing the following things:

  • Regular exercising
  • Losing excess weight
  • Avoiding substance abuse (including alcohol, tobacco, and drugs)
  • Taking vitamins
  • Wearing loose, cotton boxers

Additionally to the listed methods, you can try the Khavinson peptide supplement called Testoluten. It is a supplement based on natural peptides isolated from healthy sexually mature gobies’ testes. Testoluten has a direct action on the cells of the seminiferous tubules. It activates sperm cells synthesis and improves their motility and quality. Furthermore, this supplement normalizes the production of testosterone. Testoluten aims to improve the male reproductive system.
