Musculoskeletal pain is pain affecting muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, or bones. You may experience pain in just one area of your body, like back pain, or throughout your body in the case of a widespread condition like fibromyalgia. If musculoskeletal pain interferes with your daily activities, consult your healthcare provider.

Musculoskeletal pain types

  • Bone pain. Bone injury, such as a fracture or other musculoskeletal injury, causes bone pain. A tumor can also cause bone pain.
  • Muscle pain. Muscle cramps, spasms, and injuries can result in muscle pain. In addition, certain infections and tumors may lead to muscle pain.
  • Joint pain. It is common for joint pain to be accompanied by stiffness and inflammation. Joint pain typically improves with rest and worsens with activity.
  • Ligament and tendon pain. Ligaments and tendons are strong bands of tissue connecting your bones and joints. Tendon and ligament pain can result from strains, sprains, or overuse injuries.

Musculoskeletal pain causes

  • Musculoskeletal disorders, including arthritis, osteoporosis, scoliosis, etc
  • Injuries, such as bone fractures, strains, sprains, or joint dislocation
  • Poor posture
  • Overuse injuries
  • Bones, muscles, or other soft tissues infections
  • Direct blows to muscles, joints, or bones
  • A prolonged period of bed rest, such as during an illness or following surgery
  • Certain tumors

Musculoskeletal pain treatment

Primary care doctors typically provide musculoskeletal pain treatment. However, in specific cases, rheumatologists, orthopedic specialists, physical therapists, osteopaths, or other specialists may be involved in providing your treatment.
Your doctor will prescribe you a particular treatment based on your musculoskeletal pain cause.
Options for musculoskeletal pain treatment include:

  • Therapeutic massage
  • Physical therapy
  • Osteopathic or chiropractic manipulation
  • Acupuncture or acupressure
  • Occupational therapy
  • Vitamin, herbal, and mineral supplements – an example Here
  • Using special devices, including braces, lumbar supports, orthotics, or taping
  • Relaxation and biofeedback techniques

Surgery as musculoskeletal pain treatment

  • Laminectomy. It is a type of back surgery aimed to relieve compression on the spinal cord. Lamina is removed during this procedure. Lamina is a portion of the spinal column that makes up the vertebral arch. In addition, the doctor removes bone spurs in this procedure because these structures can put pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots.
  • Joint replacement. In this surgical procedure, a prosthesis is used to replace a damaged or ailing joint.
  • Arthroscopy. The surgeon makes a tiny incision and inserts a small camera (arthroscope) into the affected area to perform this surgical procedure. Once the surgeon has identified a problem with the joint, the arthroscope can be used to correct the issue using small instruments.
  • Cartilage and soft tissues repair. This procedure aims to restore normal joint stability by reparing the functionality of cartilages, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Musculoskeletal pain medications

In order to alleviate pain, inflammation, and musculoskeletal pain complications, your physician may prescribe you medications, such as:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin, naproxen (Aleve), or ibuprofen (Advil);
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol);
  • Corticosteroid injections into affected area;
  • Opioids are prescribed only for severe pain because of the addiction risk and side effects;
  • Medications such as eszopiclone (Lunesta), ramelteon (Rozerem), and zolpidem (Ambien) can be prescribed to improve sleep if your musculoskeletal pain affects it;
  • A low dose of medications that increase the body’s level of serotonin and norepinephrine may be prescribed for patients with musculoskeletal disorders such as fibromyalgia;

Also, you can try the Khavinson peptide supplement called Sigumir to alleviate musculoskeletal pain and improve the functioning of your musculoskeletal system. Sigumir contains peptide bioregulators isolated from young animals’ bone and cartilage tissue. This supplement is intended to restore the function of the musculoskeletal system. Sigumir aimed to treat joint, bone, and vertebral diseases caused by improper diet, injuries, metabolic disorders, and aging.
